This week I was challenged by someone completely unexpected. A celebrity, in fact. Kathie Lee Gifford. Whaaaaaat? It threw me off, too! I don’t know much about her. Just the fact that she used to be on a show with Regis and now exists the dynamic duo of Kathie Lee and Hoda on the Today Show. Other than that, she’s never really crossed my mind. Her husband of almost 30 years passed away a few weeks ago, and she returned to the Today Show this week. She gave an incredibly touching tribute to her husband, which you can watch here (if you have 8 minutes—it’s worth it). I don’t usually watch videos that long on the Internet, but something kept nudging me to watch it. So, I did. A little half-heartedly at first, but my ears perked up around minute 3:15. At this point she began talking about how her husband Frank asked Jesus into his heart at a young age. Then she said these words, “Those of you who are hurting today and feel hopeless, it [Christianity] just might be the answer for you…in fact I KNOW it’s the answer for you.” At this point I was completely engaged! Here’s a celebrity who is probably encouraged NOT to talk about her faith on television, but she did anyway. She’s been given this platform, and rose to the occasion after her great loss. She’s throwing her stone well. (Keep reading to understand!)
She spoke about a trip she and Frank took a couple of years ago to the Holy Land. They went to the Valley of Elah, which is where the young shepherd boy David fought and killed Goliath. Their friend told them to pick up a stone from the Brooke of Elah to always remind them of that moment. Frank placed that stone in the room with his trophy case, so that anytime anyone would ask to see his trophies (he was a football star), he would take them to this room, show them the stone, and tell them about GOD. He had all the right in the world to brag on himself. He had trophies, rings, and Emmys to be proud of. Yet, he chose to brag about GOD instead!
After I watched the video, I read the story in 1 Samuel 17. Goliath challenged the Israelites to send a man to fight him for 40 days! Morning and evening. The Israelites were TERRIFIED! Like shaking in their boots terrified! The shepherd boy David came to the camp to give his brothers food when he heard the giant taunting them. He told Saul he would go and fight him. Saul doubted his ability, but David replied, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” He gathered five stones from the brooke, took his slingshot, and approached Goliath. David told Goliath that he would surely win because he served GOD…the LIVING God! He said, “For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.” David took one stone out of his pouch, slung it with his slingshot, and hit Goliath directly in his forehead. He fell over, dead! This, of course, terrified the rest of the Philistines, and they RAN! Shaking in THEIR boots this time! Hooray!
David believed in the one true LIVING God, ladies. This story is so inspiring to me. His faith and courage are astounding! We can learn a lot from his example. You see, all of us have been given stones. We have gifts, talents, abilities, and callings that we all must use for the kingdom of God. When we have faith that God has given us all we need to conquer and accomplish all He’s called us to, we can slay all the giants who try to stand in our way. We’ve been given stones that we might transform this hurting world for God’s kingdom.
As Kathie Lee and Frank challenged their children, so I challenge you…
Where are you going to throw your stone for the kingdom of God?
