I woke up on the far side of refreshed and it felt like I left my head in one of my dreams. There he was though, my sweet little boy with sleep lingering in his eyes and the toy he slept with the night before in his arms. There he was, waiting at the side of my bed, waiting for me to greet him and invite him into my cocoon of blankets for some cuddles. I pulled him close, hoping that it would be one of those rare mornings where he would just dose off next to me, pulling me back to sleep with him. Instead, he squirmed and wiggled, kneeing me in the back. He decided he would start concocting a master story line with his toy, one that included plenty of fake fighting sounds and “AHHHH’s!” Suddenly, staying in bed didn’t sound so appealing.

The morning had taken off like an overly anxious sprinter and my sleepy self was already falling behind.

Have you ever had mornings like this? Days where, right from the start, you know that you are just not prepared to take it on. You guzzle down coffee in an effort to kick start things but that glorious nectar falls short of reviving you. You try a shower, but then you cut yourself shaving, your favorite pair of jeans are dirty and that one fly away hair is on a mission to Take. You. Down. Days where the list ahead of you seems unending and the problems that you have to solve seem far too big and complex. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about.

Days like that, where you start from behind can certainly be rough but there is hope. There is something more alluring than the smell of coffee and more refreshing than a nice long shower, someone that can give you a lead on the day that took off without you.

“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” Psalm 46:5 NIV

Some days, the only thing we’ve got going for us is the one who is within us. On those days, where our own strength is failing, our weakness is whining, and our heads can’t leave the pillow, He is there to help. Just as the sun breaks through the night to declare that it is day, He breaks through our struggle to declare that this is the day that He made. For us. And He helps us rejoice in it.

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118: 24 NKJV

Because He is within us, loving us, encouraging us, strengthening us, we will not fall. Because He is strong in our weakness, generous in His provision, and present in our every moment, we can take those days and dance upon them.

“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV

If we let Him, He will strengthen us from the very start. Those days where we rely on His help have the potential to turn out far better than those where we rely on ourselves. Because it’s in those days that we make space for a team mate and this team mate, well He’s a game changer.

So before you make that coffee, run that shower, or even try to get yourself out of bed, turn to him. Ask for His help in all that you are facing that day whether it’s big or small. Pray that He would remind you that He is right there in it all flexing His great big muscles as he guides us throughout the day. And above all, remember that He is within you holding you up like the very spinal chord that he placed in your back. With Him, you will not fall and maybe you’ll become a morning person yet.
