12 Days of Christmas Giveaway: Day 9; Fashionistas

12daysofchristmas

There are only four giveaways left in our 12 Days of Christmas! Today we have partnered with The Holy Yoga Shop with Holy Yoga Ministries.

Holy Yoga Ministries is a worldwide ministry that uses yoga as a tool and to grow closer to God. Brooke Boone (founder) and the team states it like this:

Holy Yoga is the intentional practice of connecting our entire being, body, mind and spirit with God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With complete reliance on God’s Word and prayer, Holy Yoga invites us to surrender and introduces us to Grace. When we breathe and move and have our being in Christ, we find ourselves in the flow of His magnificence. There is often a misunderstanding that yoga is a religion; it is not. Yoga is a spiritual discipline, much like prayer, fasting and meditation. Yoga has the capacity to enhance our personal beliefs and faith.

We practice with our minds set on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy (Phil 4:8), not with our minds emptied. We meditate on the wisdom of God’s Word (Psalm 119:9-16, 26-27), not on man’s wisdom. We seek the transcendence and glory of God, not our own.

As their mission statement puts it, “Holy Yoga is experiential worship created to deepen people’s connection to Christ. Our sole purpose is to facilitate a Christ-honoring experience that offers an opportunity to believers and non-believers alike to authentically connect to God through His Word, worship and wellness.”

Holy Yoga offers ministry opportunities worldwide, whether it be through their Outreach, in the church, or even in Spanish.

The Holy Yoga team has offered to give away a Love is our Mantra tee from their shop. Isn’t it cute?!

The phrase “Love is our Mantra” was taken from idea behind John 13:35 which states,

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 (NIV)

Fashionistas

I love clothes. I love the feel of soft fabrics, the weight of poofy dresses, and the joy that comes from a perfectly coordinated ensemble. I love making new outfits by mixing and matching accessories or pairing a different shirts with the same go-to skirt. I love layers. I love patterns. I love lace, and bows, and flowers. There’s just a sense of satisfaction that comes over me when I look in the mirror and see each piece of my outfit come together.

I’m forcing my love of coordinating outfits on my daughter. She doesn’t seem to mind.

I love that clothes can make a statement about who you are. On any given day, you can tell the world a little about yourself just by what you choose to put on. Maybe it’s your favorite color or your favorite college. Maybe it’s that you are a practical person and choose function over fashion. Or maybe you’re like me and choose to let the hopeless historian speak through the touches of vintage, retro, and romance in your ensemble.

A few of my favorite 1920’s style hats.

Each day, when you get dressed, every sweater, every necklace, every oxford or heel or boot cut or skinny jean comes together and, in perfect harmony, sings the song of who you are.
I like to think that the Lord knew that His girls would appreciate fashion and so, in a grand display of His deep love for us, he threw in some clothing illustrations in the Bible. He’s just good like that.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12

As God’s people, this is how we should dress. These characteristics should be our basics, the thing that every girl should have in her closet. Think of it this way; Compassion is that favorite sweater that you can put on over anything, providing comfort and warmth for you or a friend in need. Kindness is that perfect layering camisole, close to your heart, covering up all wrongs like cleavage or caustic remarks. Humility is that pair of sweat pants that always fits even when you’ve eaten too much, reminding you that no one is perfect and everyone needs grace and elastic. Gentleness is that pair of boots that are super comfortable, go with everything, and have soft soles that don’t wake up the baby when you walk on hard wood floors. And patience? Well patience is that little black dress, the one that’s timeless and flattering, the one that you wish you could wear every day but instead, must wait for a special occasion to don.

When it’s all said and done, each of these pieces are a must in our spiritual wardrobe. We need them because these are the traits that will show the world who we are; “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.”

But wait! There’s one last thing. What’s an outfit without the accessories right? For me, the perfect necklace or hair piece, hat or ear rings make the outfit. They tie all of the colors together and add that extra oomph to the style your conveying.

“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3: 14

Love is that perfect accessory. It’s the thing that just puts your outfit over the top. Love is the virtue that will stand out, speak out, make a statement. It’s the thing that can bring color, value, beauty to the image that you portray. And like a pair of diamond ear rings, it is expensive, paid for in the form of the blood of the perfect lamb.

Without love, all the other stuff just falls flat. It will only amount to a missed opportunity, a half way put together outfit. Your image will be unfinished, who you are won’t speak as loudly.

Without love, you’re just a little girl, playing dress up.

What do your “clothes” say about you? Who do you portray yourself as? If it doesn’t match up with what Colossians says, then consider this a nomination for “What Not To Wear.” Allow the Holy Spirit to gently raid your closet and get rid of those sweaters that are only appropriate for very specific Holiday parties or those zip off cargo pants that were cool fifteen years ago.

Clothe yourself in the stuff that matters. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience are high-end brands. They’ll never go out of style. But remember, no outfit is complete without the accessories. The greatest of these is love. Get dressed, and look in the mirror, you should see a woman that is holy and dearly loved.

I make sure the clothes I wear are respectful and modest. I have been starting to get some clothes for me and my family from sources that support missions as well. But one can only own so many t-shirts. :)

    • Kelsey Lasher

Love your priorities Rachel! Hopefully this t shirt fits in with your collection! Too many shirts for good causes is definitely ok :)!

  • Kristen C

    I loved your imagery, Kelsey!

    • Kelsey Lasher

Thanks Kristen! Paul gave me some great stuff to work with :)!

I loved reading this “When we breathe and move and have our being in Christ, we find ourselves in the flow of His magnificence.”
It isn’t all about fashion for me (though I do love to express myself through it), it’s about an all-encompassing expression of love and relationship. I’m pursuing Holy Yoga certification this January, and I’d love to be able to wear their clothing while showing women to display their love of Jesus through words, movement and fashion-expression. Thanks!

  • Kaelyn M

Love this post! “Get dressed and look in the mirror, you should see a woman who is holy and dearly loved.” This shirt would be an amazing reminder to do just that, and encourage those around you to do the same!
