My heart is restless and my thoughts are often too scattered to sort through.

Most mornings I wake up before my alarm. And even before I can gather my first thought into something coherent I am already panicking.

Too much to do. Too much to manage. Too much to make sense of, sort through, and accomplish.

Almost every single morning my heart is beating for something other than my Savior. In the few hours I spent sleeping I have already forgotten that I am His.

I have forgotten that He has redeemed me and made me new; that He has brought me to a place where I am free to not perform; that I do not have to be owned by the never ending list of tasks; that I can be an imperfect mother because He is my children’s perfect Savior; that I can fail my husband because He is my husband’s perfect Rescuer; that my business can fall into the ground because I am no longer defined by my measures of success rather I am defined by Him who counted it as joy to die for me.

So I remind myself.

O God, You are my God;

Early will I seek You;

My soul thirsts for You;

My flesh longs for You

In a dry and thirsty land

Where there is no water.

Psalm 63:1

Designed by Ashlee Proffitt

I set my alarm every morning so I can spend time with a Savior who loves me, who knows me and who wants to be near me. Not for the sake of accomplishing a task or earning favor. But for the sake of being near Him who loves me so.

See, there is nothing I could ever do to make Him love me any more than He already does right now. My spending time in the Word or in prayer is not an act of obligation. It is an act of love.

Of course it is not always perfect and there are many days where my motives are off but mostly my heart’s desire is to just be near Him. To know and love Him more every day.

My days are full. Full of beautiful gifts, abundant blessings and opportunities. But no matter how amazing those blessings are they still add up to very full days without much room for margin. I am a pastor’s wife, mama to 4 little ones (one waiting for me with Jesus), a business owner, children’s ministry director, small group leader and on and on the list goes. My days must start with a reminder of my Savior. A reminder that I have been justified, redeemed, and reconciled to Him. That I have nothing to prove, nothing to earn.

I wake up while it’s still dark. I enjoy a cup of black coffee. And I open the Bible. And I read. And I pray. And sometimes it isn’t pretty and a lot of times it is messy but I’m there, in His presence seeking to know and love Him more.

My days are too full to not start with Him. Otherwise I will just keep forgetting.

My favorite tip (for pushing aside distractions)

I keep my planner and a blank piece of paper by me while spending time with Jesus. For whatever reason the enemy likes to taunt me with outlandish things that feel super urgent during that time. So one trick is to just write that thing down and you can get to it later, or not. But for sure, cleaning the garage is not necessary at 6:00 o’clock on a Tuesday morning.

About the Author

2013 Shay CochraneAshlee Proffitt

I am a driven and passionate women who believes in the grace of Jesus. I am a pastor’s wife to a man who desperately loves Jesus and points me to Him daily. I am a mama to 4 little ones, one of whom is in heaven and I can’t wait to be reunited with one day. I own and operate a business that exists to come alongside creative entrepreneurs to build strong, authentic brands as well as creating goods that inspire women with Truth in their everyday lives. Lastly, I am a sucker for anything in a shade of white and accept Starbucks as a form of payment.

Ashlee has graciously donated one of her Joy coffee mugs (see below) to give away to one winner. Click here for more details about this gorgeous product. We are pretty sure sipping from this coffee mug would make anyone’s day brighter from the start! :) Wouldn’t you agree?

Here’s a tidbit from Ashlee about her business:

I fell madly in love with the art of design while studying at James Madison University and subsequently received my degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design. I was raised with art all around me, a mama and granny who loved experimenting with different mediums and I never remember a time where I wasn’t doing the same. But college is where I became perpetually obsessed with thoughtful typography and to this day I am still head over heels for all things paper and ink.

Today, I have the pleasure and honor of owning a business that serves those passions. I work with the most amazing business owners as we strive to build strong, genuine brands. And I have the joy of creating goods that inspire women with Truth in their everyday lives.

My morning routine begins with a shower & getting ready for the day. Then I hit the coffee pot, scramble some eggs, and sit down for my devotional – I’ve been using @shereadstruth for 2 years now & find something new in the Word every morning. I love the community with the other women, but I also find such rest, peace, joy, and love in those quiet morning times. After saying goodbye to my husband for the day, I quickly clean up the kitchen, pack my lunch, & I’m out the door myself.

You can find me on Instagram @katsmith1026

I love the eggs part of your morning – I wish I made the time! I LOVE some good protein for breakfast. Instead, I choose sleep and eat a cinnamon raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese when I get to work. She Reads Truth is awesome…I often use them as well. What do you do for your job?

      • Kathryn Smith

We started doing eggs about a month ago when we did the Whole 30 Challenge – a great experience! I work as a high school special education teacher just outside of Richmond, VA. I’m in my 5th year of teaching high school students with significant intellectual disabilities, & just love it!

  • Chelsy Phillips

My morning routine starts about 6 a.m. I get up, start coffee and then have my quiet time with Him before all chaos ensues for the rest of the day! My Instagram is @sweetpeasandkisses

P.S. I wasn’t going to enter another giveaway but I collect coffee cups and this one needs to be in my collection. Maybe I should just go order it now? 😉

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

You should keep entering! Seriously! But if you don’t win, yes…you should order it!! :)

  • Becky

My morning starts at 6:30. I’m up, getting my coffee and heading to our home office for my time with the Lord. Then once my toddler son is up, we’re off to the races! The gym for workouts, errands around town, play times, etc. :)

Sounds like you have full days, but start them off right! :)

  • Amber

My morning routine starts with me hitting the snooze button at least once and sometimes twice around 5:30 am. Then it’s shower time, get dressed. Wake up my 5th grader. Help him find his clean clothes while he’s rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Then make-up time so I can do my best not to scare anyone off. Grab my lunch from the fridge, my granola bar from the pantry, kiss my kid as he heads off to the bus stop and I head off to work. Once at work I head to the Kuerig to get the caffeine coursing through my body. Follow me on Instagram @Sweetshine76

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Amber, I hit the snooze button often 3 times…EEK! Getting out of bed is the hardest part of my morning! haha I also have a Kuerig at work and it is a lifesaver!!! I cherish the first few minutes when I get to work – I first get caught up with emails, etc…but then I enjoy a few minutes sipping coffee. :) Thanks for sharing.

  • Susan corbin

My morning routine starts with waking up abruptly at 5 am getting ready for work and rushing out the door to make it by 6. I then follow with praying in the car on my way to work and then after wokr chores checking my email to read the blog if glow..find.me.on instagr am @hellomrscorbin

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Susan, WOW…5am!!! You are a saint! I remember having to wake up that early for work when I worked at the coffee shop in college. I didn’t mind it so much then, though. I guess you get used to it? Thanks for sharing!

  • rachel

I’m on maternity leave currently so my mornings start early with feeding baby and grabbing a granola bar and yogurt. I have been doing Psalms with GMG and journaling most recently.

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Rachel, I’m sure you have tired eyes, but a full heart with a new little one! How do you like GMG? I haven’t ever tried them, but I have heard great things! They seem wonderful!

      • rachel

I was a part of GMG groups for 2-3 years. Great resource and work Courtney has. Highly recommend getting Proverbs 31 study from there. It changed my heart towards my marriage. And all resources are free. I hate paying for bible studies. I’d much rather just crack open my Bible. :)

        • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Ok thanks so much!! I will have to do that and let you know it goes!! Thanks for the tip!

  • @honeyandbetts

My morning routine happens when my year old baby girl wakes up at 7am, once she’s changed we then have breakfast. We play and read books until 9am then she gets a snack before her nap at 9:30am. Once she’s down for a nap then I can get ready for the day – shower, makeup, dressed.

  • Moriah Nelson

    Love this!!! My morning routine:
Wake up to worship music at 5:45, then quiet time until 6:30 or 7:00. Then breakfast, getting ready for the day, then school at 8:00 :)

    • Moriah Nelson

Oh! And my Instagram is @isaiahseven9

  • Morgan Colander

My alarm goes off and I wake up by reading the most recent GLOW post in bed. Then I spend about 20 minutes getting ready, I make a protein shake and do my quiet time. Then it is off to class I go!

Ps I don’t understand how to leave a comment through my Instagram account:)

  • http://www.hannahjmckay.com/ Hannah McKay

I just posted about “joy in the morning” on my Instagram feed (@hannahjmckay) a few minutes before I saw your blog post and the give away! Ha. Great minds.

I love all your thoughts here. I like your idea of keeping your planner nearby. The same thing happens to me. I follow the same general routine you have. Up before the sunrise, coffee, Jesus time and then the day begins. I always feel better when I start the day like that.

  • Stacey

These days, my morning starts whenever my three-month-old baby boy beckons me… But it’s early. :-/ I feed him, we hang out, and just when he’s getting ready to go down for a nap, his two older brothers start stirring. I get the baby down, get breakfast for the older two boys, turn a cartoon on, then finally I grab some coffee and breakfast! I’m hoping my baby will start sleeping more at night soon so that I can then use this first nap to have my quiet time in the other room. I used to think I had to have my quiet time in a quiet house while everyone else slept or napped. But isn’t there something beautiful and GOOD about your kids seeing you spend time in God’s word?? :) Anyways, I love this mug – it’s such a great reminder for this season I’m in! My Instagram is @staceymensik.

  • K’Leigh Joseph Ware

My mornings are not as routine as I prefer but that’s life with an almost two year old! :) When my alarm manages to beat the babies internal alarm I get up, get my Spark and have my quiet time. If I do not beat the little one out of bed (its a race not anything physical 😉 ) then I still grab the Spark but bring the baby and her milk with me and at least try to get in some devotional time and save quiet time for nap time or bed time. Breakfast once my big girls are up then its clean off the table and begin school for the day! :)) @mommaware

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

You are seriously super mom!!! How do you do it all??!

  • Abby B

My morning routine: nurse baby girl, breakfast for both girls and coffee for Mama, play and read a Devo or blog on my phone, nap for baby girl and Art journaling for Mama and toddler girl :)

  • Bethany McDade

Ashlee, thank you for that beautiful reminder from Psalms! I am the same way – I wake up thinking about my to-do list. And I’ve started doing the same thing recently – when those thoughts start invading my mind during my breakfast with Jesus, I write it down and move on. I don’t think Jesus minds the interruption – I can be more fully his!

My favorite mornings are days off work, when I can get out of bed and have breakfast and coffee with scripture and my prayer journal. And then pop open my planner to plan my day! :)

    Instagram: @bmac820

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Bethany – I feel ya girl!!! I’m the same exact way :) Side note: what planner do you use? I got a Simplified Planner for 2015 and I’m super stoked about it!!! :)

  • Cari

My morning begins with going to my 1 year old’a room and seeing that chubby round face smiling! Best part of the day! No matter how tired I am, i usually instantly go
Into play mode because his happiness and playfulness in the morning is contagious! Then we get each get Cheerios and fruit for breakfast and I fix some coffee. We just enjoy the peaceful calm of the dawn. After our breakfast he plays while I have some time with the Lord. <3

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Love it!!! The smiling face part is by far my favorite.. Other than spending time wkth the Lord of course. What type is fruit do you put in your Cheerios? I like both strawberries and bananas! Oh! And blueberries! :)

  • Katie Brisco

My morning routine is letting my puppies out and feeding them, make coffee and once they’re done with their out door business the 3 of us go to my craft room and curl up in the recliner while I read my daily devotional and Bible while drinking coffee. I call it Coffee with Jesus. It’s my favorite part of the day and it’s what I look forward to when I go to bed. Since I work from home (The Turquoise Barn crafting/repurposedjunk/boutique) and dont have to pick up the kids I nanny till 3pm I usually stay in my pj’s till noon unless I go to the gym at 10 lol

  • Sarah Elmore

@sarahnelmore here. My morning days aren’t much of a routine these days. My Ph.D. student hubby is usually out the door before I can blink (if he’s not we’re both running around trying to get him there!) then I head over to grab some coffee or tea. I’m been a journey, reading my devotionals daily. It seems that everything – anything – pulls my attention away but I am fighting it. After an unexpected loss in February I’ve found myself clinging to the word joy. My heart has been so broken from this world and I just long to remember my joy comes in the morning. I would love this mug as a promise of His love and sweet reminder as I begin every morning!!

    • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin

Sarah, your words meant so much to me. Thank you for sharing your heart. I too have found that sometimes when you feel alone and at the bottom, Gods word is the only thing that can bring joy back in our lives. I’m glad you are a part of this community – keep engaging sister, we want to hear more from you!

  • http://alyssamartinphoto.com Alyssa Martin
