Liam has been an absolute champ in the arena of sleeping. I don’t say that to be THAT mom. But for the sake of the story, bear with me! We haven’t had a night of constant crying with no consolation in months.
But the other night I could not calm him down. I was letting him cry it out because the exhaustion was written all over his face. I was trying to get unpacked from a week away, get a shower in, and finish up laundry. This was the time he was supposed to be asleep for goodness sake! I got him out of his crib, burped him some more, changed his diaper, sang him a song, sucked out his nose with my Nosa Frida (check it out… You’ll think it’s gross but it’s awesome… #MomLife) and so on. Nothing. Nothing was working! Those are the moments I want to bawl with him! Crawl into a ball and bawl. Both of us are just a couple of little babies. Finally I laid him on the couch next to me, stuck my finger in his mouth, and he was out. Out, I tell you!
As a woman I love to be able to multitask. I’m usually running around my house doing a million and one things at a time. There’s always something going on in my head. My to-do lists HAVE to be done, by golly.
I prayed for this need to get everything done to go away in this moment. I had my beautiful baby boy next to me (finally) sleeping like an angel… I wanted to take it in. The laundry can wait. The hot pocket I heated up for myself can wait. The bags can stay packed. The shower can wait. This is my happy place. The world sort of fades away when I can stare at this peaceful little guy… untainted by the world. Peaceful as can be. Safe in my arms.
We get so caught up in the million-and-one things on our to-do lists that we often miss these precious moments. Take time today to tell people you love them. Stare at your babies. Play with them. Read to them. Call that friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. Write a note by hand and send it via snail mail. Take some time to enjoy the slow moments in life. They’re gone too quickly.
“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalm 107:8-9
